Cornwall bank holiday urged for St Piran

Cornwall councillors are urging the government to create a public holiday to mark the patron saint of tin miners.

St Piran’s Day is held on 5 March every year.

Councillors are asking the government to create a bank holiday in Cornwall in place of May Day and have asked officers to report on the costs.

St Piran is said to have come ashore at Perranporth in the 6th Century, having journeyed in a currach, a small boat, from Ireland.
